Ruth ch2:19-ch3:13
19 Her mother-in-law asked her, “Where did you glean today? Where did you work? Blessed be the man who took notice of you!” Then Ruth told her mother-in-law about the one at whose place she had been working. “The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz,” she said. 20 “The LORD bless him!” Naomi said to her daughter-in-law. “He has not stopped showing his kindness to the living and the dead.” She added, “That man is our close relative; he is one of our guardian-redeemers.” 21 Then Ruth the Moabite said, “He even said to me, ‘Stay with my workers until they finish harvesting all my grain.’” 22 Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, “It will be good for you, my daughter, to go with the women who work for him, because in someone else’s field you might be harmed.” 23 So Ruth stayed close to the women of Boaz to glean until the barley and wheat harvests were finished. And she lived with her mother-in-law.
3 One day Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi said to her, “My daughter, I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for. 2 Now Boaz, with whose women you have worked, is a relative of ours. Tonight, he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor. 3 Wash, put on perfume, and get dressed in your best clothes. Then go down to the threshing floor, but don’t let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking. 4 When he lies down, note the place where he is lying. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell you what to do.”
5 “I will do whatever you say,” Ruth answered. 6 So she went down to the threshing floor and did everything her mother-in-law told her to do. 7 When Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirits, he went over to lie down at the far end of the grain pile. Ruth approached quietly, uncovered his feet and lay down. 8 In the middle of the night something startled the man; he turned—and there was a woman lying at his feet! 9 “Who are you?” he asked. “I am your servant Ruth,” she said. “Spread the corner of your garment over me, since you are a guardian-redeemer of our family.”
10 “The LORD bless you, my daughter,” he replied. “This kindness is greater than that which you showed earlier: You have not run after the younger men, whether rich or poor. 11 And now, my daughter, don’t be afraid. I will do for you all you ask. All the people of my town know that you are a woman of noble character. 12 Although it is true that I am a guardian-redeemer of our family, there is another who is more closely related than I. 13 Stay here for the night, and in the morning if he wants to do his duty as your guardian-redeemer, good; let him redeem you. But if he is not willing, as surely as the LORD lives I will do it. Lie here until morning.
Hebrews 1:1-4, 2:5-12
1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.
5 It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6 But there is a place where someone has testified:
“What is mankind that you are mindful of them,
a son of man that you care for him?
7 You made them a little lower than the angels;
you crowned them with glory and honour
8 and put everything under their feet.”
In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them
Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them. 9 But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honour because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10 In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered. 11 Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. 12 He says,
“I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters;
in the assembly I will sing your praises.”
Mark 10:2-16
2 Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” 3 “What did Moses command you?” he replied. 4 They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.” 5 “It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. 6 “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’ 7 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, 8 and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” 10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.
13 People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” 16 And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.
Homily:
We reach the third instalment today of our study of the Book of Ruth and as today I am sharing this spot with Peter and his Farmer’s Ramblings, I need to be brief. Last week we left Ruth gleaning in the fields of Naomi’s relative Boaz. As widows Ruth and Naomi were afforded certain privileges like gathering any grain which had fallen whilst being harvested and the protection of gleaning at the edges of the field.
Today we need to look at another custom in order to make our study easier to understand. Last week we looked at Levirate marriage where when a man died, it was the responsibility of the man’s brother to marry his widow and give her at least one son who then was able to claim the dead man’s property as an inheritance and keep it in the family. But what happened if the man had no brothers? Today we read of the solution to that. Naomi remembers that Boaz is in fact a special kind of close relative of the family.
This man is known as a “Kinsman Redeemer” because it was his job to redeem the property of the dead man and allow the family to inherit if there were no brothers. He was like a chieftan in the family, a special representative not just any relative. Naomi realizes she has found a solution for Ruth. She knows that she will not always be there to look after her and is aware of her precarious position as a young attractive woman in a foreign land. So, the two of them hatch a plot to help Boaz to notice Ruth although as we saw last week, he seemed to be well aware already of this beautiful woman and invited her to sit at the table with him and receive tasty morsels of food.
Marriage was very simple in those days. A young woman who wished to marry a man just simply went and lay down at his feet whilst he was sleeping. If he then spread his cloak over her they were both agreed: they were married. All this was done with the background of the Kinsman Redeemer. Ruth was not being provocative: she was urging Boaz to take up this Israelite tradition and save her from widowhood and all her husband’s possessions being given away to someone else. Boaz was delighted when he got over the shock of a young woman asking him to marry her. And he viewed the proposal as another example of Ruth’s great kindness which she had showed to Naomi. Boaz was obviously an older man, surprised by the younger, beautiful woman finding him attractive.
We end with a problem, however, and true love is not ready to run smoothly yet because Boaz may be a Kinsman Redeemer but he is not the one closest to Ruth and it has to be that closest person who has the first opportunity to redeem her. He knows and tells Ruth that he must speak to this closest relative first but if he does not wish to marry Ruth, Boaz will marry her.
I don’t know about you, but this book is full of people who show real kindness and integrity to one another. They really seem to want the best for everyone. We have not come across any kind of villain up to this point. How much easier would our lives be if everyone we met did everything they could to create unity and peace amongst others? If they treated everyone with the respect which they themselves would ask of others. Life is very hard sometimes, we lose the people we love, we do not get on in our jobs and our families have problems. The Naomi, Ruth, Boaz triangle shows us people who had all kinds of problems and they could easily say that life was unfair but they always seemed to hold everyone else in the highest esteem and just got on with things. An example to us, perhaps?
So will Ruth and Boaz marry? We will see next week.
