+ In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen
The Greeting:
Grace, mercy and peace
from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ
be with you
and also with you.
Prayer of Preparation:
Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit
that we may perfectly love you
and worthily magnify your holy name;
through Christ our lord. Amen.
The Gloria:
Glory to God in the highest,
and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King,
almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks,
we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the father,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world:
have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father:
receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God, the Father. Amen
The Collect for Pentecost:
God, who as at this time
taught the hearts of your faithful people
by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit:
grant us by the same Spirit
to have a right judgement in all things
and ever more to rejoice in his holy comfort;
through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God now and for ever. Amen.
Readings:
Acts 2: 1-21 The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”
14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 “‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved.
Romans 8: 14-17
14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
John 14:8-17
8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”
9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. 15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
Homily:
Today we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost. It’s also known as the birthday of the Church, when the Holy Spirit came in power and the Christian Church began to spread throughout the known world. The Jewish feast of Pentecost was one of the three main Jewish festivals where every male Jew who lived within 20 miles of Jerusalem was legally bound to travel to the Temple to observe the feast. Travelling conditions were at their best in June when this festival took place. It commemorated two things: the giving of the law to Moses and it also had an agricultural significance. Each family was required to offer two loaves of bread in thanksgiving for the Harvest. So, our first reading today begins with the crowd gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate the feast. And we read that they were Jews from every nation of the world and also proselytes: those preparing to be received into the Jewish faith.
Somewhere in the City meanwhile, the 11 disciples were gathered, along with the 120 people who had been converted by Peter’s words to them. As they waited together, they all experienced something like a violent wind and what seemed to be tongues of fire that came and rested on them. We don’t know exactly what had happened but the effect on those early believers shows us that a miracle had taken place. They were able to speak to all those nationalities present in their own languages and Peter was able to preach to them. The frightened disciples had become brave men who were prepared to be martyrs. The rough fishermen had become great preachers. The Holy Spirit: the promised gift from God had arrived. As Peter and then Paul along with others like Luke , Silas, Mark and Timothy travelled to other countries, their lives exhibited the same power as Jesus had exhibited. They healed the sick, drove out demons and raised the dead. They told people of how God loved them and Jesus died and rose again for them. We are here today because someone told us about Jesus and we made a decision to follow.
In our day, of course, preaching the Gospel has to take a different form. Our children learn about all the different religions in school and we are at the stage where their parents and grandparents do not practise the faith in any formal religious way. Thankfully in our villages people still see the Church as important in their lives when they come for baptisms, weddings and funerals. We still have Church Schools which invite us in to take assemblies and come to visit our buildings. We can still talk about Christianity to them.
One person who is never afraid to talk about her beliefs is our Queen and it could not have escaped anyone’s notice that this week we have been celebrating her Platinum Jubilee. I don’t know whether you watched the Trooping of the Colour on Thursday? I am a bit of a royal watcher so I did. I was interested in the interview at the beginning of that programme where Kirsty Young was talking to Sir Michael Paling and Dame Penelope Keith. One of them said: “so many things have changed during the past 70 years but she is unchanging in her tolerance, understanding, communication and care for the environment.” Sir Michael said that when she became Queen a spiritual change went through the country. She and Prince Philip were a young attractive, energetic couple with a young family and they began to serve a country that was just emerging from the darkness of a second world war and rationing was just beginning. Throughout the war, the King had looked worried, worn out and ill but then this new Elizabethan Era began. Now, most of us cannot remember a time when Queen Elizabeth was not our Queen providing a sense of unity and longevity. Through her Jubilee she is now the image of the emergence from the hardships of two years of pandemic.
She is a woman of strong Christian faith which she has increasingly over the years spoken about in her Christmas message. She embodies what it is to be a follower of Jesus as she still fulfils her promise of service which she made when she was 21. She once said to a member of her staff: “I have to be seen to be believed”. I wonder what it is about her that she wants us to believe? Perhaps it is those qualities which Sir Michael mentioned: that she brings to us: her subjects a model of unity, tolerance, understanding, communication and care for us all and the environment. The crowds on the Mall show us that even if we are to believe that we are moving much more towards a Republic, there was one tiny woman who was the focus. The crowd all wanted to cheer and wave their flags of support. All seemed to be well with the world when we saw her on the balcony. It was not a day for this 96 year old to give in to her mobility problems because her people needed to see that she was there with them. And also on the balcony was her way of showing us that even when she dies, those values will go on through her son, grandson, great grandson and their own families.
That’s what our faith demands of us too. We are called to bring unity in our communities and to restore those values which some people think are just old fashioned and not relevant any more. We are called to be tolerant when people annoy us and criticize us. We are called to try and understand those who are not a bit like us. We are called to communicate our faith by the way we love and go the extra mile. We are called to care for all other human beings and for our environment. The same Holy Spirit gives us and Queen Elizabeth the desire to do that every day and he is always present with us giving us the reassurance we need. Jesus taught us how to serve and calls us to be the best we can be.
