+ In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen
The Greeting:
Grace, mercy and peace
from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ
be with you
and also with you.
Prayer of Preparation:
Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit
that we may perfectly love you
and worthily magnify your holy name;
through Christ our lord. Amen.
The Gloria:
Glory to God in the highest,
and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King,
almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks,
we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the father,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world:
have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father:
receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God, the Father. Amen
The Collect – Trinity Sunday:
Almighty and everlasting God,
you have given us your servants grace,
by the confession of a true faith,
to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity
and in the power of the divine majesty to worship the Unity;
keep us steadfast in this faith,
that we may evermore be defended from all adversities
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Readings:
Proverbs: 8: 1-4, 22-31
Does not wisdom call out?
Does not understanding raise her voice?
2 At the highest point along the way,
where the paths meet, she takes her stand;
3 beside the gate leading into the city,
at the entrance, she cries aloud:
4 “To you, O people, I call out;
I raise my voice to all mankind.
22 “The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works,
before his deeds of old;
23 I was formed long ages ago,
at the very beginning, when the world came to be.
24 When there were no watery depths, I was given birth,
when there were no springs overflowing with water;
25 before the mountains were settled in place,
before the hills, I was given birth,
26 before he made the world or its fields
or any of the dust of the earth.
27 I was there when he set the heavens in place,
when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep,
28 when he established the clouds above
and fixed securely the fountains of the deep,
29 when he gave the sea its boundary
so the waters would not overstep his command,
and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.
30 Then I was constantly at his side.
I was filled with delight day after day,
rejoicing always in his presence,
31 rejoicing in his whole world
and delighting in mankind.
Romans 5: 1-5
5 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
John 16: 12-15
12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
Homily:
It’s that Sunday again. Trinity Sunday: when we try to grapple with what it means to worship a God who is three different persons but is still the same God. So, I remember last year I showed you a shamrock and talked about St Patrick who by his preaching helped to convert many of the Irish people to Christianity. The story goes that one day he was preaching and he noticed shamrocks growing at his feet. He stooped to pick one up and told the people that each leaf stands for a part of the God-head; God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Three distinct leaves but one stem. And then I used the example of a pitchfork with three prongs but one implement. And then I said that we could use a triangle or a tripod or tri- something else. I remember we were in Thompson because after the service Mark said “So, how about a trifle then. That’s cream, custard and jelly: three ingredients and one dessert. Well done, Mark. You can preach today!
The fact is, however, that the Bible does not make it very clear how we are to view the Trinity and theologians have not made it any easier. The gospel passages for the past few weeks have been from St John chapters 14-16. They are known as the Farewell discourse because they are attributed to Jesus at the Last Supper when he is telling his disciples what will happen after he leaves them at his Ascension. I have neatly sidestepped all those readings and preached on something else so far, but today’s the day to give it a go.
Chapter 14 begins with several verses describing Jesus’ relationship with his Father God. He says to an exasperated Philip who, you will be pleased to hear, doesn’t get it either about the Father and the Son: “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and that the Father is in me?” Then he goes on to say: “On that day” (when the Holy Spirit has been given), “you will realise that I am in my Father, and you are in me and I am in you”. So, not only Father and Son but Father and Son and you, all united and part of one another.
There is an extremely close relationship between the Father and Son and we can know all we need to know about God by looking at the life of Jesus: his character and his ministry. But our belief is not just in the Father and the Son. Jesus also promises that when he leaves to return to the Father, he will send another Helper called the Holy Spirit. In chapter 14, we read that one of the Spirit’s roles will be to remind the disciples of what Jesus taught. Then in our gospel passage for today we read about the relationship between the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. “He” (that is the Spirit) “will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he has made known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine”. Now you know why I have not preached on these readings!! They are brain twisters for sure.
In our reading today, Jesus calls the Holy Spirit: the Spirit of Truth who will guide us into the ways of truth. In my experience, truth is in short supply these days. As I read the newspapers and watch the TV news, I find that various different slants are put on the reporting and its very difficult for us to find out what the whole truth of a given situation is. If you have ever watched Prime Minister’s Question time you will have seen a group of politicians expanding and bending the truth in order that they can proceed with their chosen set of policies without too much opposition. In my previous job with the Youth Offending team, I met many young people who did not seem to know the difference between truth and falsehood. They regularly spun me a yarn about why they had to commit a crime and how it really wasn’t their fault.
Sometimes it’s much more subtle than that, however, and its very difficult to know whether the advice we are being given is in fact the whole truth and how we should decide what to do in a given situation. As Christians, we have the Spirit of Truth who we can turn to when we are confused and don’t know what to do. The person of Jesus gives us all we need to know about how to live a life which befits our calling. He was someone who consulted his Father God before every major decision such as appointing his 12 disciples. On that occasion, he spent the whole night in prayer. He tried to make the lives of everyone he met better by meeting him and he denounced those who lied and cheated. He overturned the tables of those who were making money out of the animals sold for sacrifice in the Temple. He lived a sacrificial life for others. He served even though he was a leader. He always forgave people and did not bear a grudge. When we need to make a decision or evaluate something we have heard, we can compare the way people are reacting with the way Jesus lived.
We have the Spirit of Truth at our disposal in order to lead us through those situations where we might be tripped up by other peoples’ scheming and attempts to use us for their profit at our expense. Sometimes it’s hard to understand how we should be living and where our role models should come from but today we see a Trinitarian God who leads and protects us, giving us assurance of his presence with us through the Spirit of Truth.
Intercessions:
On this Trinity Sunday let us pray to the Father through the Son and in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Lord God may the Church reflect the unity of the Trinity, may there be Godly harmony, shared ministry, mutual support and encouragement in the faith. We pray for Tori and Adam preparing to be ordained as priests at the end of this month in Norwich Cathedral and for all being ordained or testing their call at this time. We also pray for our Bishops Graham, Alan and Jane. We pray for this church and our Benefice, giving thanks for all who have served within it through the ages and those who serve now. Lord in your mercy: hear our prayer.
Lord God, may the world’s leaders seek not personal power but public good; may conflicts especially those in Ukraine be faced honestly and all needs recognised and met. May all our communities be built up in what is good, true, just and right. We pray for all those people involved with relief agencies and organising lorries to take supplies to those in need. We pray for those who are sheltering refugees and working with them in voluntary agencies. Lord in your mercy: hear our prayer.
Lord God, may there be love and respect for one another in every household; may there be mutual support and thoughtfulness, consideration and trust. Today we pray for the community here in Breckles. We pray for the many who will visit our area as the holiday season gets under way and pray for their refreshment and safety as they enjoy the beauty of Norfolk.
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Lord God, we bring before you those who are ill and those who care for them; those who are unhappy and those who comfort them; all who are undergoing surgery or painful treatment and who have no one to turn to. On this day we pray for our friends, members of our families and all our loved ones in need of prayer: therefore we pray for …… Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer
Lord God, we bring before you those who have died in faith and will now see you face to face. We pray that the dead may rise to new and eternal life, restored for ever. We pray for the recently departed, especially Ian Robert Bentley, Archdeacon of Lynn and Peter Harold John Robertson who have died recently. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer
Lord God, on this Trinity Sunday we pour out to you our praise and wonder at the hidden mysterious holiness of your Being, so full of glory and love.
Merciful Father,
accept these prayers
for the sake of your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen
The Peace:
Peace to you from God our Heavenly Father.
Peace from his Son Jesus Christ who is our peace.
Peace from the Holy Spirit, the life-giver.
The peace of the triune God be always with you
And also with you.
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
Final Prayer:
Almighty and eternal God,
you have revealed yourself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
and live and reign in the perfect unity of love;
hold us firm in this faith,
that we may know you in all your ways
and evermore rejoice in your eternal glory,
who are three persons yet one God,
Now and for ever. Amen.
The Blessing:
God the Trinity make you strong in faith and love, defend you on every side, and guide you in truth and peace …
And the blessing of God Almighty,
the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you
always. Amen
