+ In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen
The Greeting:
Grace, mercy and peace
from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ
be with you
and also with you.
Prayer of Preparation:
Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit
that we may perfectly love you
and worthily magnify your holy name;
through Christ our lord. Amen.
The Gloria:
Glory to God in the highest,
and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King,
almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks,
we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the father,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world:
have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father:
receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God, the Father. Amen
The Collect:
O God the King of glory
you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ
with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven:
we beseech you, leave us not comfortless,
but send your Holy Spirit to strengthen us
and exalt us to the place where our Saviour Christ is gone before,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen
Readings:
Ezekiel 36: 24-28
24 “‘For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land. 25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. 28 Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God.
Acts 16: 16-34
16 Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.” 18 She kept this up for many days. Finally, Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her. 19 When her owners realized that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities. 20 They brought them before the magistrates and said, “These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar 21 by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice.” 22 The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods. 23 After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. 24 When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.
25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose. 27 The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!”
29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33 At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized. 34 The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole household.
John 17:20-26
20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. 25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
Homily:
The reading from Acts this morning continues the story we began to look at last week of Paul’s visit to Philippi where we see the spread of Christianity gathering pace. First of all, we meet a slave-girl who is a bit of a groupie following Paul and the others around and, at first, she seems to be quite an asset as she is continually shouting out and telling people that Paul and the others have been sent by God and that the people should listen to them and be saved. It would seem, however, that the slave-girl is not what she seems because no one is being attracted by her words and no one is being converted. After many days of this, Paul is understandably annoyed with her shouting out and he delivers her of the evil spirit which turns out to be the one causing all the commotion. With the slave owner’s way of making a lot of money gone, he has Paul and Silas dragged before magistrates saying that they are disturbing the peace and trying to persuade them to believe things which are foreign to them. Paul and Silas are then flogged and put in prison and the Philippians believe that normal life can then be resumed. But normal life is not about to be resumed. There is an earthquake which shakes all the doors of the prison and the locks no longer hold. Paul, however, who could have escaped, chooses to stay in his cell because he knows that the jailer would be punished if he lost his prisoners. The jailer is so overcome by the power of God in using an earthquake to save Paul and Silas that he immediately brings his whole household to be baptized and they are added to the growing number of people saved. The early Church was no stranger to miracles and discerning the will of God in supernatural ways. Those who God chose to further his work were endowed with the spiritual gifts necessary to do just that.
Last Thursday which, of course, was Ascension Day we read of the very beginning of what was to be the Church. The eleven disciples went with Jesus to the Mount of Olives and there he left them to return to his father. Before he went, he told them to go and wait in Jerusalem to receive that power they would need to be his witnesses. I can imagine them worrying and arguing as they left the mountain. “Why Jerusalem when we come from Galilee?” “I want to go back to fishing, there’s no lake here”. “What am I going to do? I left my job to follow Jesus.” So, the motley crowd decided to go back to the Upper Room where they had held the Last Supper and where they had been hiding for the 40 days since the crucifixion. If we fast forward 10 days, we know that it was while they were hiding there that Jesus sent his promised helper and they were changed in an instant to men able to speak in many foreign tongues in order to witness to the crowds gathered in Jerusalem for the Feast of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit had been given in order for the Church to spread.
These miraculous days of the Early Church are set for our readings in this season following Easter up to Pentecost. Like all of our readings set for specific Sundays, they are there to inspire us to go further in our own faith and following of Jesus. Jesus himself tells us how this could happen. He tells the 11 to “Wait” in order to receive. We read that even though they were hiding away they “all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.” Paul and Silas had been flogged within an inch of their lives and we read that at midnight they were praying and singing hymns to God with the other prisoners listening to them and it was then that the earthquake struck.
If we continue faithful, whatever is happening in our lives, we are more likely to see God at work. If we want our churches to grow, we have to spend time in prayer, worship and fellowship with likeminded people. In 1949, the island of Lewis in the Hebrides experienced a massive revival which spread through the whole island. All ages were flocking to the church because they felt that they had to confess their sins and live a renewed life. The revival happened after two elderly sisters who were housebound and infirm started to pray for more people to come to their church. They were 82 and 84 years old. God showed those two ladies that if they could get a Scottish preacher called Duncan Campbell to visit, God would use him to bring revival. At first it seemed impossible but his diary miraculously cleared and he was able to spend two weeks with them. Those two weeks grew into two years and the growth began.
For a few years now the Church of England has had an initiative between Ascension Day and Pentecost. It is called Thy Kingdom Come and basically it is about praying for 5 specific people to come to faith. We could do that. We have missed a few days but that does not matter. There is an App you can download if you like that way of doing things but it does not have to be that complicated. Just think of 5 people who you would like to see following God a bit more seriously and pray for them every day until next Sunday. Prayer and waiting on God changes things. It always has, since the beginning of the Church. It is no different now. Our Bible readings are not just about long ago, they are about what can happen if we seriously wait and petition God. I’d like to see a few miracles, how about you?
Intercessions:
Let us pray to God who gives us so much and loves us so completely.
O Lord we pray that there may be a fresh outpouring of the Spirit in all areas of the Church. We pray for our Bishops Graham, Alan and Jane. We pray for this church and for all the activities which have been planned for this summer. We pray for our Benefice and for an ever-growing cooperation between all the churches because unity helps us to move forward and accomplish more.
Lord in your mercy: Hear our prayer.
O Lord we pray for godly leaders and advisers all over the world and for the courage to speak out against injustice and evil. We continue to pray for Ukraine and all the relief agencies working to bring good out of this war. We pray for those who have given shelter to refugees, that support for them may continue to be found.
We pray for those recently elected to local councils through the United Kingdom that they may come together to look to the future and overcome the effects of inflation and rising costs of essential items. In our country we pray for industries and areas of life still badly affected by the time spent in lockdown. We pray for those, both employed and self-employed whose livelihoods are now precarious and who are in danger of losing their jobs.
Lord in your mercy: Hear our prayer.
O Lord we pray for our communities that we may always be aware of those affected by isolation and loneliness. We pray for all the activities which take place within our villages: for all leaders and those who support them. We also pray for our local schools in Caston, Thompson and Great Hockham in this half term break and for those children who find school difficult because of additional needs that funding may continue to be found to address those needs.
Lord in your mercy: Hear our prayer.
O Lord we pray for those who have lost their way in life and may feel rejected and unloved. We pray that the Church may be at the centre, helping people to understand that they are always loved and have a purpose. We pray for those with medical problems and for all the people on waiting lists for essential operations and treatment for serious medical conditions. We pray for those who know who are need of our prayers on this day……..
Lord in your mercy: Hear our prayer.
O Lord we pray for the dying and especially those who are unprepared or frightened. Welcome into your kingdom those who have died in faith particularly Peter James Childerhouse whose funeral took place this past week; may they live with you for ever. We also pray for the 19 children who lost their lives in the shooting at their school in Texas this week.
Lord in in your mercy: Hear our prayer.
Merciful father
Accept these prayers
for the sake of your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
The Peace:
God has made us one in Christ. He has set his seal upon us and, as a pledge of what is to come, has given the Spirit to dwell in our hearts. Alleluia.
The peace of the Lord be always with you
And also with you.
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
Final Prayer:
Eternal God, giver of love and power,
your Son Jesus Christ has sent us into all the world
to preach the gospel of his kingdom:
confirm us in this mission,
and help us to live the good news we proclaim;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Blessing:
The Spirit of truth lead you into all truth, give you grace to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, and strengthen you to proclaim the word and works of God;
and the blessing of God Almighty,
the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you
always. Amen
