The Greeting:Grace, mercy and peace
from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ
be with you
and also with you.
Prayer of Preparation:Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit
that we may perfectly love you
and worthily magnify your holy name;
through Christ our lord.
Amen.
The Gloria:Glory to God in the highest,
and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King,
almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks,
we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the father,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world:
have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father:
receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God, the Father.

The Collect – Trinity Sunday:Almighty and everlasting God,
you have given us your servants grace,
by the confession of a true faith,
to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity
and in the power of the divine majesty to worship the Unity;
keep us steadfast in this faith,
that we may evermore be defended from all adversities
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Readings:
Isaiah 6: 1-8
6 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another:
“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”
4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.
5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”
6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”
8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
Romans 8: 12-17
12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.
14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
John 3:1-17: 3 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”
3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”
4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
9 “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.
10 “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
Homily by Revd Joy Fernando:
There’s a bit of a joke goes round some parts of the church about today: that the curate should always preach on Trinity Sunday. The joke being that the concept of God the Trinity is really difficult to understand, in fact probably impossible for the human brain to get itself around. The Vicar will have been trying to explain it for as long as he or she has been in ministry and now it’s the curate’s turn. Well Adrian and I did not work it out like that. We just preach on alternate Sundays and I get what comes round in my turn – and so does he.
So, the curate might do something like this. He/she might show you a shamrock and talk about St Patrick who as you all know lived in the fourth century and by his preaching helped to convert many of the Irish people to Christianity. The story goes that one day he was preaching and he noticed shamrocks growing at his feet. He stooped to pick one up and told the people that each leaf stands for a part of the God-head; God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Three distinct leaves but one stem. Or the curate might use something like a pitchfork as an example: three prongs but one implement. And we could use: a trefoil (I became a guide at the age of 12) or the idea of steam, water and ice (I’m not so sure about that one!) or a triangle or a tripod or tri- something else.
So, now I’ve done my curate bit, let’s try something different. This year there are 22 (if you count today) Sundays in the Trinity season before we reach Advent when we begin to think again about Jesus being born as a baby at Christmas. That’s another 4 Sundays. So, the year has conveniently divided itself into equal halves: the Sundays leading up to the Trinity season and the ones afterwards.
In the birth of Jesus in the stable we see the Trinity at work. In our Gospel passage today, we read that famous verse: John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.” In the beginning God the Father created the world through his Spirit and by his word- so one God in action with three different aspects. But as the world developed it moved further and further away from the perfect place the Father had made. God tried many different ways of getting the attention of the world. Adrian was talking last week about the importance of prophecy in our world today, people prepared to speak out about injustice.
In our times, maybe to write to the MP or join a campaign. God sent many prophets in Old Testament times and their mission was always the same. It was to try and shake people awake from their evil and destructive ways in order to change the world. We read in our Old Testament reading today of the dramatic call of Isaiah to be a prophet to Israel.
But nothing lasted for very long, so eventually God had to come and live the human life to get everyone’s attention. Over the past 26 weeks we have been following in the footsteps of God’s Son, Jesus as he lived and died and rose again in order to teach people how to love. And it was a revolutionary teaching most of the time. He came to the Jews who were a fiercely religious nation but its no good just living by hundreds of different rules if there is no real love that is prepared to bend and sometimes break those rules.
The final Sunday of our half year celebrates the coming of the third person of the Trinity. God the Son could only be in one place at one time: in Palestine 2000 years ago. God the Spirit moves amongst the people of God in all ages and in all places. As the Spirit moves, people are drawn into the Trinity and inspired to live in a radical way. Adrian told us last week of his Confirmation when he realized in some way even at the age of 11 that he was called to the priesthood. I have to say that my confirmation was much more of a non-affair. I was 15 and my Vicar said that if I wanted to sing in the choir I had to be confirmed. That’s not a requirement, by the way. But I just wanted to be with my best friend. Of course, even though I did not feel any different, it was still a way of God getting my attention.
Just coming up two years ago, I was sitting in the congregation as I did every week at the Fountain of Life. My history as most of you know is that I had been in church ministry 20+ years before but had given it up because for many reasons the circumstances of God’s call were too difficult for me. In that moment two years ago, God called me back. It wasn’t an audible voice, but it was something I knew I couldn’t ignore.
God doesn’t just call clergy. He calls all of us to action. He calls us to raise Christian families, to love difficult neighbours, to sacrifice time and possessions for him. And we are never too young or too old. Jeremiah told God he was too young, but God still used him to prophesy to a people sent into exile. Abraham was too old to father children when he was called out of his homeland to father a whole nation.
This group of churches just off the main road from Watton to Thetford is about to undergo changes. Adrian and Marian will leave us next week and God will call us to something new. Can I ask you please to begin praying about what he is calling you to do or to stop doing? Who is he calling you to love? Most of all, please pray for the appointment of new clergy in this area of Breckland.
Intercessions:
On this Trinity Sunday let us pray to the Father through the Son and in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Lord God may the Church reflect the unity of the Trinity, may there be Godly harmony, shared ministry, mutual support and encouragement in the faith. We pray for those who are preparing for their Ordination this year and we also pray for our Bishops Graham and Alan. In the Diocesan Prayer Calendar we pray for the Salvation Army and for Major Howard Russel the Divisional Commander and in the wider world for La Iglesia Anglicana de Mexico.
Lord in your mercy: hear our prayer.
Lord God, may the world’s leaders seek not personal power but public good; may conflicts especially those in the Middle East be faced honestly and needs recognised and met. May all our communities be built up in what is good, true, just and right. We pray for the success of the humanitarian mission to Gaza following the bombing in that area and also for the many Third World countries affected by Covid.
Lord in your mercy: hear our prayer.
Lord God, may there be love and respect for one another in every household; may there be mutual support and thoughtfulness, consideration and trust. Today we pray for the community here in Thompson and we pray especially for the local school, the Community Hall and local groups. We pray for the many who will visit our area during this holiday period and pray for their refreshment and safety as they enjoy the beauty of Norfolk.
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Lord God, we bring before you those who are ill and those who care for them; those who are unhappy and those who comfort them; all who are undergoing surgery or painful treatment and who have no one to turn to. On this day we pray for our friends, members of our families and all our loved ones in need of prayer: therefore we pray for ….
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer
Lord God, we bring before you those who have died in faith and will now see you face to face. We pray that the dead may rise to new and eternal life, restored for ever. We pray for the recently departed, especially Audrey Newbury who has died recently.
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer

And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
