37 The hand of the LORD was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the LORD and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. 2 He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. 3 He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?”
I said, “Sovereign LORD, you alone know.”
4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! 5 This is what the Sovereign LORD says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. 6 I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’”
7 So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. 8 I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.
9 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.’” 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet—a vast army.
11 Then he said to me: “Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.’ 12 Therefore prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: My people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel. 13 Then you, my people, will know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and bring you up from them. 14 I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the LORD have spoken, and I have done it, declares the LORD.’”
Acts 2: 1-22 The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”
14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 “‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved.
John 15: 26-27, 16:4b-15: The Work of the Holy Spirit
26 “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. 27 And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.
16 I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, 5 but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
Homily:
Happy birthday to you all.
Because today, Pentecost Sunday, is the birthday of the church. It was when really the church came alive. The key reading comes from the Acts of the Apostles (2. 1-21) where St Luke records the coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples and all those gathered together on the Day of Pentecost.
In a week that has seen terrifying bombing in Gaza and in Israel and street fighting in Jerusalem and even anti-Semitic protests around the UK, it is difficult to believe that somewhere in Jerusalem there was a large room where all the disciples and many followers, their families and all sorts of people were gathered together. They came together no doubt for safety but to celebrate the Jewish feast of Pentecost.
This large gathering was shattered not by an Iranian produced Qassam rocket which the Palestinians are firing on Jerusalem or even the noisy Israeli rockets firing at Gaza - but by the Holy Spirit. Not since the baptism of Christ, when the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus, have we seen such an outpouring of the Holy Spirit to change the world.
Pentecost was a Jewish Festival before the Christian Church took the title over. Remember all the disciples were Jews and on this day they were coming together to give thanks to God for the first fruits of the wheat harvest and also to remember the law given by God to Moses. So, this was a special day with not doubt special ceremonies and a day to look forward to. But the day was taken over by events which began with a violent wind in the room and the Holy Spirit came upon them. For those in the congregation or on-line who love reading Greek or Hebrew, you will know that the words ‘wind’ and ‘spirit’ are the same in both languages. So, when the wind came, this was the spirit of God moving on each one of those present. It was something they would never forget.
Then came the ‘tongues of fire’. So, the disciples who would have spoken Aramaic, known a little Hebrew and Latin, now could speak any language.
The tongues of fire touched each one of them and they could speak every language in the known world. I know today that a number of Christians have this gift of speaking in tongues but actually it is no use unless you can understand what the person is saying. This event at Pentecost was not a matter of having difficulty in deciphering words: it was real language telling the wonderful story of God’s intervention in the world. Pentecost was a noisy and amazing event which affected everyone present and the result was that the disciples and followers poured out into the streets of Jerusalem and people thought they were actually drunk.
My claim to fame was that I was confirmed when I eleven and the family came together afterwards for a reception. Somehow, I managed to get a glass of champagne and when a little giggly, my uncle who was a Vicar asked what was the matter and I simply said, ‘I think that it must be the Holy Spirit’. He was not amused and the glass was quickly taken out of my hand. But actually it was from that date that I wanted to be priest and that never wavered until I was ordained aged 23 in Sheffield Cathedral. Actually, I thought that the Confirmation service by the Bishop of St Albans was a wonderful experience.
Pentecost was also amazing experience for the disciples. Their lives were changed for ever and everything they did was empowered by the spirit of God. Peter, the rough and probably just basically educated disciple talks to the crowds that assembled about the prophecy of Joel telling them that there would be outpouring of the spirit in the last days and everyone who calls on the name of the Lord would be saved. Today all those gathered together had witnessed this outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The result was that 3,000 people were added to the number of believers. Even the late Billy Graham would be delighted with that number and so would the Church of England.
So, Pentecost is the day when we look back the creation of the world but we also look forward. As you can see from the pew sheet and church news, the new Bishop of Norwich has created a new vision –
Transformed by Christ. We are asked to be
prayerful, pastoral and prophetic.
Easy to remember but difficult to put into operation, but in my mind these concepts are all very important and the one that is often forgotten is to be prophetic. It is basic to the calling to the priesthood and is basic to all that the church does. At this time in the life of the church here being prayerful, pastoral and prophetic are so important. Our task in this Group of Parishes is immense but we can all pray and look to the future. There is no doubt in my mind that the future will be better than the past, and your task with Joy’s guidance will be to help all those in our care to know the love of Christ in their lives.
