Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world:
have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father:
receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,

Almighty God,
whose Son revealed in signs and miracles
the wonders of your saving presence:
renew your people with your heavenly grace,
and in all our weakness
sustain us by your mighty power;

Readings:
Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10
All the people gathered together into the square before the Water Gate. They told the scribe Ezra to bring the book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded for Israel. 2 So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. 3 He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.
5 Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up. 6 Ezra praised the LORD, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands and responded, “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground.
.8 He read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read.9 Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law. 10 Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
1 Corinthians 12: 12-31a
12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.
15 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less honourable we treat with special honour. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honour to the parts that lacked it, 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honoured, every part rejoices with it.
27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 Now eagerly desire the greater gifts.
Luke 4: 14-21
4 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15 He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him. 16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”
20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
Homily
Do we as Christians and churchgoers think that things just happen by chance?
A Facebook friend of mine wrote this last week:
“God will make a way where there is no way! Wow .... I wish I could believe that, I thought to myself when I heard this song on YouTube a few months ago. About the same time, I read about the Apostle Paul writing to a group in some far-away land, saying that he was praying that God would make a way possible for him to go and visit them. Ha! I thought to myself. So, if Paul could go a-journeying in these far-off days, why can’t I go and visit daughter number 3 in New Zealand? Answer that one God!!!
So, he did. There’s Covid for a start. There’s that pesky yet highly successful government in New Zealand that is keeping all foreigners out of their country. That’s it, that’s all. But that was enough to form an impermeable barrier between me and my family. There’s no way into New Zealand without a life or death reason – and I didn’t want that. And there’s no way out of the country either if you want to eventually return. Two weeks of quarantine is the law and almost impossible to book. They tried. Oh, how they tried! But each time there were more than 23,000 people ahead of them in the queue.
So, calm down. Face another Christmas without them. A lot of people are having it much worse than you. But when the phone call came at ten to seven one morning, I realized the hand of God had been the puppeteer in this drama and I cried with joy, wonder and absolute shock. A combination of a brief change in the law, extra quarantine places being briefly available and one last chance shot at going on-line …. And the rest is history. Where did these quarantine rooms suddenly come from? What happened to the 23,000 in the queue? Suddenly, the will of God was done. They were coming home for Christmas.
OK, tell me I am being fanciful. Tell me that God has better things to do with his time than make me happy. Tell me anything you like. But I do believe that if he wants to make a way where there is no way, then that is his business and I am grateful.”
In this Year 3 of the Church of England lectionary our gospel passages mostly come from St Luke. We have just read of Jesus going into the synagogue in his home town of Nazareth and picking up a scroll and reading of his own destiny. What were the chances of that except that God engineered it? In his home town, Jesus and his Father God knew that it was time to declare his purposes and begin his ministry. It was the Old Testament prophet Isaiah who originally felt the Spirit of God upon him and the result was that he devoted his life to changing the lives of those who were suffering.
The Holy Spirit can sometimes be the mysterious part of the Godhead. We know about God the Father because he created the world and we see his presence in nature. We know about Jesus because the accounts of his life, ministry, death and resurrection are told every year and celebrated on major festivals. But what about the Holy Spirit? He or she seems a bit shadowy and vague. I don’t know if you ever read the book “The Shack” or watched the DVD. The DVD is a bit different to the book. God is portrayed as a larger than life, black Momma figure. Jesus is of course a carpenter. The Holy Spirit is a very thin, vacuous woman who does a lot of floating around and speaking in difficult to understand sentences.
For Jesus and for us, the Holy Spirit is so much more of a reality. He appeared in the form of a dove at Jesus’ baptism and as he did: God spoke to Jesus. Then we read that the Spirit led him into the wilderness to be tempted. Then Jesus went back to Galilee powered by the Spirit. As he stood in the synagogue and read the passage from Isaiah, Luke tells us that he was full of the Spirit.
Most of us were baptized as babies. I baptized a baby in Caston yesterday and as I poured the water over her head, I baptized her in the three-fold name of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God the Father who created her, God the Son who redeems her and God the Holy Spirit who sanctifies her. The act of sanctification is when she has been set apart as a child of God. The Holy Spirit is the One who guides us and leads us into places where we recognize the work of God, just as my friend on Facebook does.
I’m sure we can all think of times which we can’t quite make sense of humanly: when someone maybe said something to us which we needed to hear in order to make a change to a situation or confirm what we had decided to do. I had a friend when I was in my 20s. She was a lot older than me so her advice to a much younger woman was always spot on and I benefitted a lot from knowing her. One evening she rang up as she often did and I always remember her saying she didn’t know why she had rung but then proceeded to give me some much appreciated advice and counsel. The next evening, she was killed crossing a road. She had not known why she rang and after all these years I can’t remember what we talked about but I do believe that either she or I needed that conversation before she died.
The secret to all this of course is noticing God at work in our lives. Jesus knew when it was time to begin his ministry only after spending 40 days in the wilderness. Let us pray that we begin to notice more and more of God at work in our lives as we spend time in prayer and quiet with him.
