Readings:
Ruth 4: 9-15
9 Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, “Today you are witnesses that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelek, Kilion and Mahlon. 10 I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from his hometown. Today you are witnesses!”
11 Then the elders and all the people at the gate said, “We are witnesses. May the LORD make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the family of Israel. May you have standing in Ephrathah and be famous in Bethlehem. 12 Through the offspring the LORD gives you by this young woman, may your family be like that of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah.” 13 So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When he made love to her, the LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son. 14 The women said to Naomi: “Praise be to the LORD, who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel! 15 He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.”
Hebrews 5:1-105 Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness. 3 This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people. 4 And no one takes this honour on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, “You are my Son;
today I have become your Father.” 6 And he says in another place, “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” 7 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him 10 and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
Mark 10: 35-45 35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” 36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. 37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.” 38 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?” 39 “We can,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”
41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Homily: Amazingly, we have reached week 5 of our study of the Book of Ruth. We left Boaz last week in the marketplace, having become Kinsman Redeemer to the beautiful Ruth, whom he has fallen in love with. He has bought the property of Elimelech, Naomi’s deceased husband and Ruth’s father-in-law. The property includes Ruth and Boaz is more than happy to take her and marry her. So, our reading begins with all the elders in the marketplace acknowledging that they are witnesses to the transaction. We can almost imagine them cheering and clapping as the whole deed has been done with such reverence and kindness and Ruth and Boaz obviously make a lovely couple.
The Jews still proclaim God’s blessing on pretty much everything and everyone. They are very aware of God’s provision for their lives and his prominent place within them. So, they wish blessings on the happy couple just as we would. As they bless them, they mention several other Old Testament characters and I’ve scored the Bible to remind us of them. The first people they mention are Rachel and Leah, both wives of Jacob who was the son of Isaac, who was the son of Abraham. Between them these two women had 13 children. So, I think the blessing here is something about hoping that the new couple are fruitful and are given the gift of many children.
There is something more to it, however. I don’t know whether you have any black sheep in your family? If I let you into a secret: in my own, I can remember someone who came and went at family gatherings and no one really spoke about her and her relationship with my grandparents. She was referred to as “Auntie” when my parents spoke about her to me but as far as I knew, my father was an only child. There were always hushed parts of conversations about her and I never did find out the history. These days of course we are much more open about an illegitimate child, which she probably was but I was not encouraged to ask and definitely felt that what had happened in the past should stay there.
Anyway, back to Rachel and Leah. These Old Testament stories are fascinating. We can read in Genesis of the young man Jacob going back to his father’s land in order to find a wife. We should note that Jacob had had to flee from his home years before because he was basically a cheat and a liar. He cheated his older brother out of all of his inheritance and so he was not exactly welcome there any longer. But now he’s on his way back and as he stops at a well to drink and refresh himself, he meets Rachel who he instantly falls in love with. She turns out to be his cousin and in order to marry her, Jacob’s uncle makes him work for him for 7 years. Expensive bride! When the time comes for the wedding, her father sees a great opportunity for even more payback. He substitutes his older daughter Leah who is not so pretty and really needs to be married off first. When the veil is removed after the wedding poor Jacob discovers that he has in fact married Leah and he has to work for 7 more years in order to marry Rachel.
Moving on, by the time the Israelites eventually enter the Promised land they consist of 12 tribes, all named after the 12 sons that Jacob fathered with Rachel and Leah. We constantly see in these stories how God uses less than perfect people to carry out his plans.
One of the 12 sons was Judah, the one who had Joseph (the dreamer with the coat of many colours) sold into slavery. He was a pretty bad character too. He later found a bride for his first son. Her name was Tamar and she was a Canaanite woman. This was specifically forbidden as the Canaanites were the enemies of the Israelites and they worshipped pagan gods. When the son died, we know all about Levirate marriage now! Tamar married Judah’s second son. When he died, the third son was much younger and so Judah sent Tamah away to wait until the son was old enough for marriage. He did not keep his side of the bargain, however. Tamah, then took things into her own hands and disguised as a prostitute she seduced Judah. She gave birth to twins which because she was Judah’s daughter-in-law became Judah’s heirs. One of the twins was Perez. This is the disordered family which appears in our reading today. The witnesses in the marketplace bless Ruth and Boaz with children like that of Perez. Perez had obviously gone on to be well respected. He is thought to have been part of the tribe of Judah which had been given the land around and in Bethlehem.
However we mess up in our lives, God’s plan for us will come through in the end so long as we keep returning to him. In our services we always have a place where we confess our sins and hear God’s forgiveness. God called and calls those who sin, not the perfect to serve him. It’s unfortunate that when we slip up, there will always be someone to tell us we have slipped up but the Christian faith is not about guilt and shame. It is about us deepening our relationship with the God who wants us to be with him. The Story of the Garden of Eden is about a relationship between God and human beings which breaks down when we do wrong and do not ask for forgiveness. We can ask for forgiveness as often as it takes for us to acknowledge that we are loved by God and all he wants of us is that we walk with him.
We leave Ruth and Boaz for this week with a new-born son. At last some real happiness for Naomi too and some closure to the deaths and hardships of their life in Moab.
