AmenReadings:
2 Samuel 11:26- ch12:13a
26 When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him. 27 After the time of mourning was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing David had done displeased the LORD.
12 The LORD sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, “There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, 3 but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him. 4 “Now a traveller came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveller who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him.”5 David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, “As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did this must die! 6 He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity.”
7 Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. 8 I gave your master’s house to you, and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more. 9 Why did you despise the word of the LORD by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. 10 Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’ 11 “This is what the LORD says: ‘Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity on you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will sleep with your wives in broad daylight. 12 You did it in secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight before all Israel.’”
13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.”
Ephesians 4:1-16
As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. 8 This is why it says:
“When he ascended on high,
he took many captives
and gave gifts to his people.”[b]
9 (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? 10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) 11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
John 6:24-35
24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus. 25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” 26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.” 28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” 30 So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.” 35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
Homily:
As some of you know: during lockdown I was part of a scheme which was set up in Swaffham to provide a shopping and prescription service for the elderly and those who were classed as clinically vulnerable. When we finished the service, we discovered that most of our people were still unable to do their own shopping as they were a year more disabled or had lost their confidence in going out. So, some of the team took on an elderly person and committed to doing their shopping as a friend. I was doing holiday cover for one of the team this week and our gospel reading today came to mind as I encountered Tesco’s bread aisle. Normally for myself, I know which bread I buy, and I can motor straight in and pick up the bread rolls or whatever without a second glance. My mind is blown these days, however, by the range of bread that we can buy. My lady needed a Hovis Seed Sensation and so I carefully checked all the wrappers and eventually found one. I also found Hovis Lower Carb Seeded, Hovis Original 7 Seeds Bread, Warburtons Seeded Batch and Tesco Finest Superseeded Farmhouse Loaf. And that’s just the seeded bread. I could also have bought white rolls, brown rolls, bagels or sandwich rolls. I could go on, but I think you get my point.
Today’s gospel passage is all about bread. The crowds were searching for Jesus because they wanted something from him. Jesus is clear with them when they catch up with him. He says “ you are looking for me because I fed you. (The miracle of the feeding of the 5000 had just taken place) You say that you are looking for signs of heaven, but you actually want to have your stomachs filled”. Then he tells them, “don’t work for things which perish but work for those things which are eternal, that last forever.”
The affluent part of our world is for the most part interested in instant gratification and the things that temporarily stave off hunger, the pain inside. Tesco wouldn’t stock so many different types of bread if there wasn’t a demand for it. When the pandemic started, we saw how some people immediately rushed to the shops to buy basic commodities like toilet rolls and pasta. I have a photo of two friends of mine standing next to an empty fridge in Waitrose. People were messaging on Facebook to say who had just had basic commodities delivered so that others could target that shop and go and get what they wanted. I found that the only food my cat will eat was out of stock for weeks. He survived, by the way!
The people wanted to be fed by a miracle so that they did not have to take responsibility for their own needs because as we saw in lockdown that is a risky and stressful business. They basically said: “well, when our people were in the wilderness, Moses fed them with manna, so why can’t you continue to do the same?” They had missed the point. Moses was not providing the Israelites with food. Every evening God performed a miracle for them. Every morning they were able to go out and collect manna and quails. It was all so organized that on Fridays they were able to collect double what they needed because Saturday was the Sabbath when they had to take a day of rest. On other days, they collected only what was needed to feed their families because any extra would have perished. They were being taught to only take what is necessary for the day.
Today, as every Sunday, we will enact here the real spiritual significance of Jesus saying that He is the Bread of Life. Jesus, when he was at the Passover supper with his friends took ordinary, everyday bread, blessed it and it became in some miraculous way his body which would be given up for his friends. Then he took ordinary, everyday wine, the sort that the people drank all the time, blessed it and in some miraculous way it became his blood. That’s the sign that the people were asking Jesus for. When we eat and drink here at Holy Communion, something happens, something of spiritual significance, and we are changed as a result. We become people who have an eye on the eternal. We try to love others a bit more. We try to be there a bit more for our families and friends. We try to argue less and keep the peace more. We have learnt that no ordinary person can satisfy our needs. Even if Tesco were to stock even more bread, finding just the right type would not satisfy for long. Jesus is the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, the True Vine and the Good Shepherd. He makes the difference to how we choose to live our lives.
We can pray for others and situations, and they will change because we are miracle people. We can see the signs of a world which increasingly rejects God, but what we do here every Sunday enacts for those who don’t want to be here but, nevertheless belong to us, God present in their midst. Today we are here in Stow Bedon after more than 16 months. We have enacted Jesus’ death and resurrection here throughout this pandemic (when we were allowed to be open) by celebrating Holy Communion when it was this church’s turn for a mid-week service. The local people don’t know what we do here, but we do. It’s a selfless act. It’s the opposite of buying up all the pasta. As we take the bread and wine, we do so on behalf of the community. When we pray for our communities in the Benefice, we offer something on their behalf. And God performs miracles. We find it hard, of course. We don’t have all the people we need. We don’t have all the money we need. But we do have God on our side and that’s what Jesus was urging the people to notice. God can multiply our meagre resources. He fed 5000 people from one boy’s packed lunch. Our part is to continue to offer ourselves for others and watch and wait.
