Happy Christmas Everyone! We: the Clergy, Churchwardens and all the members of the various congregations within The Wayland Benefice wish you every blessing. Times are hard for us all again this year, but Jesus is born again in our hearts and lives and we invite you to celebrate with us.
+ In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
AmenThe Greeting:Grace, mercy and peace
from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ
be with you
and also with you.Prayer of Preparation:
Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit
that we may perfectly love you
and worthily magnify your holy name;
through Christ our lord.
Amen.
The Gloria:Glory to God in the highest,
and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King,
almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks,
we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the father,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world:
have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father:
receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God, the Father.
AmenThe Collect for Christmas Eve:Eternal God, who made this most holy night
to shine with the brightness of your one true light:
bring us, who have known the revelation of that light on earth,
to see the radiance of your heavenly glory;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.Readings:
Isaiah 52: 7-10How beautiful on the mountains
are the feet of those who bring good news,
who proclaim peace,
who bring good tidings,
who proclaim salvation,
who say to Zion,
“Your God reigns!”
8 Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices;
together they shout for joy.
When the LORD returns to Zion,
they will see it with their own eyes.
9 Burst into songs of joy together,
you ruins of Jerusalem,
for the LORD has comforted his people,
he has redeemed Jerusalem.
10 The LORD will lay bare his holy arm
in the sight of all the nations,
and all the ends of the earth will see
the salvation of our God.
Hebrews 1: 1-4 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.
John 1: 1-141 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Homily:
Some interesting facts for you:
Most children speak their first recognizable word between 10 and 14 months of age. Do you remember listening out for that first word and trying to work out what it was?
By 18 months most children have at least 10 words but then the number of words increases dramatically.
How many words does the average person know? (20-35,000).
How many words are currently in use in the English language? (171, 146)
Which language has the most words? (English).
Which is the hardest language to learn for an English person? (Mandarin)
Which language has the easiest grammar? (Esperanto).
As a fairly new Vicar this year, I have had the pleasure of reading lesson number 9 at a couple of carol services. It’s also the gospel passage for Christmas Day. It’s from the first chapter of St John’s gospel and it’s all about words: or to be precise: “The Word”. John does not begin his gospel with an account of the Nativity. He decides to set the scene of his life of Jesus by going back to the very start of all things.
If we were to skip back to the beginning of the Bible in Genesis, we would find there an account of the creation of our world. And we see that the creation all comes into being through God’s word. God says: let there be light and there is light. God says: let the water under the sky be gathered to one place and let dry ground appear. And it happens as he says. What started out as a formless and empty darkness became the world we now inhabit. And at each stage of the creation God looked at what he had created and saw that it was good. He was pleased by seeing what he had done.
Our words tell the world who we are and what we want. The child who is just learning to speak points and gesticulates wildly at what or who he wants and the words become clearer as he struggles to reach out for those things. Our words and our tone of voice identify us. Our accents show others where we were born or brought up or educated. We can show others instantly whether we are interested in what they have to say or whether we are tired or angry by the tone of our voice and the words we use. We still remember for good or ill what people said to us years ago. When we are ill and lose our voice, we lose some of our power over our world. There are many educational devices now to help project the voice of someone who struggles to speak because of something like muscular dystrophy or to teach children with additional needs to use pictures and signs to communicate.
So, in the beginning, God spoke the world into being. It makes sense that when He chose to save the world from the destruction it was bringing upon itself, he would speak again. But this time, his Word took on flesh in order to make the point more clearly. Just as our words convey who we are and what we know and believe, the letter to the Hebrews tells us that Jesus – t,he Word is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being. You can’t get much closer than that!
As we look at Jesus, we see a carbon copy of his Father God in the way he interacts with the world. In this uncertain world where we frankly don’t know where this pandemic will end and where we don’t know what restrictions will be placed upon us going forward: we see tonight a family who had to travel around 90 miles (the young woman in the end stages of pregnancy) to a town where they could find no accommodation and where she had to give birth amongst all the animals in the stable. Then we see them having to flee because their lives were threatened and they didn’t really know whether they would survive. That seems a story not that far away from today whether we are thinking about a pandemic or the plight of millions of refugees.
God speaks through his son into whatever our situations are. He brings hope and peace where there appears to be none. I know that many people do not really like the Message translation of the Bible, but I really like one of the phrases from tonight’s gospel in the Message. The NIV says: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us”. The Message translates it: “ The Word became flesh and blood and moved into the neighbourhood”.
This evening we worship the baby who has moved into all of our neighbourhoods and our hearts: the exact imprint of a God who loves us so much that he wants to be with us in the messes of our lives in order to transform them in to lives lived for Him.
May God bless us all this Christmas!
