Exodus 12:1-4, 11-14
The Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread
12 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, 2 “This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year. 3 Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household. 4 If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat. 11 This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the LORD’s Passover.
12 “On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD. 13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.
14 “This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD—a lasting ordinance.
1 Corinthians 11:23-26
23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
John 13:1-17, 31b-35
Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet
13 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”
Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.
31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.
33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Homily:
Whilst this lockdown has been going on, I have had two friends who have both been sending me cards with words of wisdom on them. I’ve no idea whether this will continue after lockdown but any distraction from wondering what to do with a day, when I am not allowed to go anywhere apart from local exercise, has to be good.
As I was tidying round yesterday, I noticed that their latest cards shared the same theme: One of them had: “let all you do be done with love” (1 Cor 16:14) on the front; the other had an echo of a famous Beatles song: “All you need is love”. We have reached that stage in Holy week where Jesus meets with his disciples to share a final meal and he knows that opportunities are now getting limited for what he can still teach this rugged and ragged band of men.
They were eating together the Passover meal which every Jewish Rabbi would eat with his disciples. It was full of symbolism. Our Old Testament reading tells us the background of why they were doing this. The Israelites back in Egypt were told to take a year-old male lamb and daub some of its blood on their doorposts. They were then to roast the lamb and eat it with unleavened bread and herbs, not relaxing and celebrating as they might normally do but ready to set out on a journey with a bag packed and sandals on their feet. That meal was to be the start of their deliverance from slavery. Every year at this time, Jews still meet and remember.
Jesus did several things during that meal to show his love for his followers, both then and now.
When we celebrate someone leaving our workplace or going away on a journey, we sometimes have a meal together. We may give the one who is leaving a present to show our love for them and to remind them of us and their time with us. Jesus decided to do something which would at one and the same time be both familiar and unfamiliar to his disciples. During the Passover meal, they always ate unleavened bread and drank wine. What was not familiar, however, was that when Jesus blessed them he said that the bread they were eating was his body and the wine his blood. In his inauguration of the Eucharist Jesus was leaving the disciples a special way to remember him. He knew that eventually he would leave them physically: first, when he died on the cross and then, finally, at his Ascension and in his great love for them he wanted to leave a memorial. Even though we have not met Jesus in the flesh, the same memorial in the bread and the wine gives us a way of experiencing the closest possible relationship with God.
During the meal, we see another example of Jesus’ great love for his friends. He left the table, took off his robe, put a towel around his waist and washed the disciples’ feet. They learnt that the greatest leader saw his role as that of being a servant. As Jesus loved them, he commanded them to love one another and all who would one day become his followers. On this day our Queen would normally (in non-Covid times) visit one of the Cathedrals to present the Maundy money to those people selected because of their great deeds of service to others. The way to demonstrate that we are true followers of Jesus is that whatever position we have in life: whether high or low, we exercise it with true humility. Our Queen is probably the most prominent public figure of our time who herself demonstrates what it looks like to be called to a life of humble service.
Jesus’ love extended on that first Maundy Thursday to Judas who was about to leave the meal to meet the guards and show them where they would be able to arrest him. His love also extended to Peter who was about to deny even knowing him. We can speculate about these two men, but it is fair to say that had Jesus shared with the other disciples at the meal what Judas was about to do, there would have been a riot and things might have ended differently. But, for Jesus, it could not end differently because he had to do what he had been called to do. When Judas had left them, he said: “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him”. He knew that his time had come. The deeds of a deluded man were about to set in motion events which would save the world. Jesus loved Judas and Peter and knew that what they were doing was part of a bigger plan. When we are faced with betrayal and denial by those who we would have expected to treat us better, our Christian faith urges us to continue to love the ones who are plotting against us.
Everything Jesus did was an act of love for others. As we follow him on the final part of the journey to Calvary, we remember the final verse of the hymn: “When I survey the wondrous cross……. “
“where the whole realm of nature mine
That were an offering far too small.
Love so amazing so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.”
