AmenReadings:
Daniel 7: 9-10, 13, 149 “As I looked, thrones were set in place,
and the Ancient of Days took his seat.
His clothing was as white as snow;
the hair of his head was white like wool.
His throne was flaming with fire,
and its wheels were all ablaze.
10 A river of fire was flowing,
coming out from before him.
Thousands upon thousands attended him;
ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.
The court was seated,
and the books were opened.
13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
Revelation 1: 4b-84 John, to the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.
To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, 6 and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.
7 “Look, he is coming with the clouds,”
and “every eye will see him,
even those who pierced him”;
and all peoples on earth “will mourn because of him.”
So shall it be! Amen.
8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”
John 18: 33-37.
33 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” 34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?” 35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?” 36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.” 37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
Homily:If you were in church, you might have noticed that my stole has changed colour today and after 25 weeks of green I have now changed to red. Today we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. It is the final Sunday of the Church’s year. Next Sunday, I will be purple because the new year begins with four weeks of preparing our hearts and minds for Christmas. Christmas of course is a Jesus festival par excellence. We worship the son of God born as a human baby and then we track through his life until at Easter we mourn his death and celebrate his rising. But today is not a Jesus festival. We are not celebrating Jesus the King. The title: Christ the King gives us a clue to the change in emphasis. Today we begin to focus on the eternal aspect of Christ’s reign. The baby Jesus was born in a specific time, in a specific place and could only be in one place at one time. Today we begin to think about God who is everywhere and does not exist in time. We also begin to think about the Second Coming of Christ when the world as we know it will end and he will then sit on the King’s throne.
If it’s not too irreverent, I was thinking about a possible conversation that might have taken place in Heaven over two thousand years ago. I know I have shown you this picture before but there is an icon which has three people depicted on it, sitting around a table. It is called the Trinity and imagines the relationship of the three persons of the Godhead. It’s that kind of thing I was thinking about. God the creator of the world is at a loss as to know how to restore mankind to the loving relationship he had with them in the days of Adam and Eve. You would think he would know everything about human beings, after all he created them, but after they disobeyed him and the Devil was able to charm them, God found that there was just something he couldn’t understand. He had wiped out the world and started again after a flood. He had sent endless prophets to tell the people to stop sinning and return to him. He had given the most wonderful visions of a new life lived with him. And he only needed them to try and carry out the commandments he had given them. They just needed to do their best and he would forgive them because he loved them so much. So, in my picture, he doesn’t do what to do next.
At that point Jesus says: Well, if we really don’t understand them, I will go and live amongst them. Then we will know what makes them tick from the inside. So, its agreed and in order to experience and understand everything that human beings go through, Jesus will have to die. He won’t stay dead of course because he is still God and death can’t hold on to him. The plan is conceived, and Jesus is born as a baby. He grows up and as a Jewish teacher he reinforces what God always wanted people to know. He teaches people to love all others ad forgive all others. He teaches them to pray so that the relationship with God is little by little restored. He battles with evil every day because he is misunderstood and hated even. Eventually he is tried and put to death and three days later he overcomes death and appears to his followers. 40 days later, it is time for him to leave his earthly assignment and return to his Father God. Because he has lived amongst us for three years, he literally then becomes our Advocate. When we pray, he helps us to tell God about our world and how we are living here.
One day, I like to think there will be another conversation happening in Heaven and God will again send Jesus to the earth, this time to gather the believers together and then he will establish a new Kingdom on the earth where he will be King. Already it’s like we live with a foot in each camp. When we became followers usually at our Baptism, we were given eternal life which is a different quality to the life we have now and will go on for ever after this one. But there will also be a time when the world will be judged and Jesus will return.
In our Gospel reading we see both aspects confronting one another at Jesus’ trial. On Palm Sunday, the people were laying palm branches at Jesus’ feet as he rode into Jerusalem. The Jews were and still are waiting for a great King who will ride into Jerusalem on a warhorse ready to slay all their enemies and restore their Kingdom. Jesus did not ride on a warhorse, he rode on a donkey. A man of peace not war. However, all the waving of palm branches and bowing and saluting made the Romans take note and we see Pilate asking Jesus at his trial: “Are you a King?” Because if he’s a King, they had all better prepare for battle. Jesus does not deny that he is a King, but he tells Pilate that he is not a King of this world. Of course, this confuses Pilate no end. “So, are you a King or aren’t you a King?” I guess that’s really the essential question. If we believe that he is just a King of this world we have to realise that he only has this world’s power. If he is Christ the King, he has supernatural power at his disposal to establish a rule of justice and peace which will last for all eternity.
