AmenReadings:
2 Samuel 5: 1-5, 9-10Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “We are your own flesh and blood. 2 In the past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the LORD said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.’” 3 When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel.
4 David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years. 5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.
9 David then took up residence in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built up the area around it, from the terraces inward. 10 And he became more and more powerful, because the LORD God Almighty was with him.
2 Corinthians 12:2-10: I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows. 3 And I know that this man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows— 4 was caught up to paradise and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell. 5 I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses. 6 Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say, 7 or because of these surpassingly great revelations. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Mark 6:1-13:Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.
“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.
4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honour except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” 5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith.
Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. 7 Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits.
8 These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 12 They went out and preached that people should repent. 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.
Homily:Let me gauge my audience (although, if you are on-line, I won’t know how you respond)! How many of you watched the England/Germany match on Tuesday evening? How many of you are watching Wimbledon? For me, this year’s football will never top the 1966 World Cup Final when England won against Germany. I watched that match with my Dad. When I was small, we watched every kind of sport and in the early days it was on a black and white TV. My Dad didn’t trust colour television for a long time and snooker in particular needed quite a lot of concentration to follow balls in different shades of grey around a grey table. Dad always knew where each one was. These days, long after his death, I don’t get too enthusiastic about most sports. However, when the football was on: I was watching the whole nine series of The Sewing Bee on catch up.
Whatever you want to excel at, however, requires a lot of time and discipline. Whether you are a musician, a sportsman, a sew-er, a photographer or a priest.
For any career these days it seems that training is far more detailed and long lasting that it used to be and in order to keep ahead of whatever game we choose to be in, we have to keep practicing our skills and honing our techniques. In the football and tennis we see people at the top of their careers straining for the next cup or medal.
Today’s gospel passage carries on from last week’s where Jesus healed Jairus’ daughter and the woman with the issue of blood. The distance is around 20 miles from Capernaum where the healings would have taken place to Nazareth where Jesus was brought up. I suppose it may have been that they knew they could find places to stay in Nazareth with Jesus’ family. They were there on the Sabbath day and as the good Jews they were, they went to the Synagogue to worship. As I was saying last week, itinerant Rabbis who dropped into the Synagogues were often asked to preach the sermon. On this occasion Jesus does just that.
Jesus was 30 years old when he started his ministry. People have wondered why it was so late in his life. Some commentators have wondered whether it was because Joseph had died some time before and Jesus needed to be the man of the family until they were grown up. However it happened, he would have had many years to hone his teaching and healing ministry in prayer and attendance at the Synagogue in Nazareth.
Going back to my 9 series of the Sewing Bee. Do you remember last year’s series when a young woman who for her day job was a lung cancer consultant won? When the commentator interviewed her Mum just before the final, amidst all the obvious pride she had in her daughter, it was clear she had not realized that she was an expert sewer and when she heard that she was on The Sewing Bee, she admitted to being surprised and not really expecting her to win. Sometimes, our families and close friends are the ones who don’t really see our ability and the people we really are. Jesus’ family were “astounded” it says at the way he taught them and the fact that he was able to heal people.
There is no doubt that as we go through life, some people will reject who we are and what we have to offer them. You may have experienced, in your working or social lives, times when people have been antagonistic for no apparent reason or jealous of what you had or could do, or just seemed not to like you very much. Rejection can sometimes feel so final that we have to move on from the situation before it damages us. Jesus failed to do very much more healing in his hometown. The pressure on him to just be the carpenter’s son and not anyone special was too great to allow him to do what God had called him to do. In my first stint as a minister in a church near Heathrow, the fact that I was a woman, and ordained and young, meant that many people rejected any suggestions I had to make. Eventually when the rejection had been too much for too long, I left. Although I knew that my ministry had had some successes, mainly amongst children and families, it felt like a failure and in the words of today’s gospel: I could do no good there.
As well as rejection and failure Jesus met indifference in Nazareth. People who were not interested in what he had to offer. “Is not this, the carpenter, the son of Mary …” Oh, we know him, what could he have to say to us?
Many people these days are indifferent to the fact that we believe in God and attend church. There is apparently more interest in spiritual things these days than at any time in recent history. People study the stars and read their horoscopes. They attend spiritualist meetings and practice mindfulness techniques. Many people admit to praying but don’t have a clue who they are praying to. When we have weddings, baptisms and funerals in church people are able to express what they are feeling and why they want a church service, but don’t do that in the churchy words which we have been brought up to use. They talk about the peace in the church building and knowing “something is there”. There is also a need to be close to departed relatives: often they say, “My Nan got married here”.
After Jesus leaves his hometown, we see him sending out his disciples to spread the word and heal the sick. Failure, rejection and indifference will still be a part of their mission but when that happens, they are to shake off the dust from their feet and move on. That’s because all we do; we do it in the name of God and he will deal with those situations which we find too much. Those things we see as failure, God can turn round and turn into success. We will never know in many instances what we said or what we did which made the difference between someone coming to faith or staying, rejecting or indifferent. Ours is not to know, ours is to continue loving whomever we are given to love.
