1 Samuel 17:32-49
32 David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.” 33 Saul replied, “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.” 34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37 The LORD who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”
Saul said to David, “Go, and the LORD be with you.” 38 Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armour on him and a bronze helmet on his head. 39 David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. “I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took them off. 40 Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine. 41 Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of him, kept coming closer to David. 42 He looked David over and saw that he was little more than a boy, glowing with health and handsome, and he despised him. 43 He said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 “Come here,” he said, “and I’ll give your flesh to the birds and the wild animals!”
45 David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the LORD will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”
2 Corinthians 6: 1-13
As God’s co-workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain. 2 For he says,
“In the time of my favour I heard you,
and in the day of salvation I helped you.”
I tell you, now is the time of God’s favour, now is the day of salvation. 3 We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited. 4 Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; 5 in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; 6 in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; 7 in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left; 8 through glory and dishonour, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; 9 known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; 10 sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything. 11 We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you. 12 We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. 13 As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children—open wide your hearts also.
Mark 4: 35-41 Jesus Calms the Storm
35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
Homily:
It was in October 2018 that I visited the Holy Land to see for myself some of the places where Jesus lived and ministered. One of the most precious memories I have is of an afternoon spent crossing the Sea of Galilee. The Sea is actually a lake and it is around 13 miles long and 8 miles wide. The journey under normal circumstances takes around two hours. At one point in the journey, in order to give all of us tourists and pilgrims the ultimate experience, the skipper cuts the engine and the boat bobs around on the lake. Those travelling may have been chatting about this and that up to this point but gradually we all became silent as we took in the amazing views of the Golan heights and the town of Capernaum not that far away. We must have sat for an hour. The silence was at times overpowering as we no doubt all began to think about all the sights we had seen to that point and also began to take in what it must have been like as Jesus and his friends set sail for the other side.
It had been a hard day for them, particularly for Jesus and he asked them to cross the lake in order to have time for himself before the next huge crowd caught up with them and needed everything he had to give them.
So, God Himself is sitting in the stern of the boat where there was a cushion and a makeshift cover to keep out the cold. In the next few weeks, our Gospel readings follow the Gospel of Mark as we see Jesus performing miracles and driving out demons. All is well. All is peaceful. Jesus falls asleep; the human Jesus is exhausted and needs to catch some rest urgently. I wonder what the disciples were doing? Maybe asking questions of one another about the day’s teaching about the Kingdom of Heaven. Maybe just rowing silently, lost in their own thoughts.
The Sea of Galilee was and still is notorious for its storms. They come out of the blue as winds rush down from the mountains, through a narrow space and then across the lake, churning up the water and bringing torrential rain, thunder and lightning. No seasoned fisherman such as Peter, Andrew, James and John would have set out if they had had warning that a storm was brewing. But suddenly, they were in the midst of it. They tried their best to steer the boat to safety before the fear that they were going to lose their lives gripped them and they turned to Jesus, still asleep in the stern. “Teacher, don’t you care that we are perishing?” they said. Maybe one of them shook him awake.
I wonder how many of us have heard people say things like: “Where was God when that happened to me?” How can he be a God of love when he lets wars and famines happen? Maybe in the last year: “How can there be a God when thousands have died and are dying from Covid-19? It’s the age-old problem of suffering and its not easy to answer.
Jesus may have been asleep in the stern of the boat, however, but God never sleeps.
Psalm 46:11 says: “The Lord Almighty is with us;
The God of Jacob is our refuge”
Maybe we can learn something from the disciples. The first thing we can learn is that they did not get everything right. Jesus often had to tell them off for not having sufficient faith. We are in good company when we don’t know what to do.
This was a desperate situation. Without intervention they would probably have all drowned. God of course could have performed the miracle of stilling the storm without any intervention from the disciples. After all, he was not going to let his son die in the Sea of Galilee because he needed to die on a Cross in Jerusalem. That was the plan. So, we have to think that He was waiting for the disciples to cry for help. If as the Psalmist says: God is our refuge, he needs us to cry out to Him when we need help.
It’s not like the insurance policy kind of prayer. Their child is ill, so they make a bargain with the God they never normally talk to. “If my son gets better, I will go to Church every week and never doubt you again”. It’s a good start though because God loves his children to talk to him but, more than that, he wants his children to be in an on-going, daily relationship with him where we talk through everything which is happening in our lives and ask for help. Sometimes we will have an urgency about that. Folks who are about to drown will not approach Jesus tentatively and quietly. I like to think they would have shook him awake.
Jesus’ words to the storm are interesting too. He says to the waves: “Quiet! Be still!” The commentators say that the Greek words and grammar used here are like that of the owner telling a pet dog to behave itself. The human Jesus asleep in the boat is also God: Almighty and Powerful, who can tell the fiercest storm to behave itself. And it did. They sailed into port with no more trouble. God can intervene in whatever troubles us. When we ask for help, we unleash all the powers of Heaven on our situations. And we don’t know where that will lead. The speed and efficiency of human beings finding and developing a vaccine which will eventually keep this virus under control shows the power of God to control nature in this age. I’m sure many of us can think of occasions when we don’t know why we have acted in a certain way but if we hadn’t, our lives would not have turned out as they did.
God is a God of miracles and power in every age and in every place. He calls us to be in relationship with him.
